Hall was born in Philadelphia to a classical trained musician couple on the 11th of October, 1948. His parents gave him piano and voice lessons hoping that he would follow their classical path, but he was most interested in rock music. During his junior high school years, he joined with a black vocal group in Philadelphia. The group allowed him to sing with them and they were impressed by his commitment to the music. But Hall continued to learn classical music as he didn’t want to let down his parents. He managed to focus on both musical styles simultaneously and he succeeded too.
John Oates born on 7th April, 1949 naturally had a profound interest in rock music as his parents were also interested in it. He joined guitar classes and eventually became a good guitarist. During his teenage years, he spent his time mostly with the local hops apart from practicing with other different bands that he formed along with his intimate friends. Like Hall, Oates too became a musician and studio backup vocalist.
For the first time, Oates and Hall met each other in 1967. As both of them had similar interest and passion, they were able to become friends quickly. They started to work together by 1969. Their first album ‘Whole Oates’ was released back in 1972 and was ignored by fans and critics alike. But their second album ‘Abandoned Luncheonette’ was a massive hit and received good reviews from all directions and it ultimately became their trademark sound.
But after their third album, they didn’t have great success. However in the 1980’s they were able to garner more hits and was regarded the most fortunate rock duo during that decade. During that period they had five number one single in the US and had two albums reach the top ten. They were deemed in 1984 the most successful recording duo.
They have both focused on solo projects and released their albums. But those albums were not well received and it had less success than the ones released with their joint efforts.
They are basically rock royalty and you need to get their albums out of your storage unit dust them off and give them a listen to again.
