Roughly seven years ago the alternate youth of the U.K anticipated one of the biggest music revolutions since Punk. The excitement was felt in all the indie clubs, at every festival and gig the UK had to offer. We all believed it would change our lives.
However this dream died along with The Strokes and The Libertines, what once looked like the beginnings of a massive movement in the music world was now a two year wonder for a few ego hungry bands.
The growing arrogance and megalomaniac aspect of the music world is having a detrimental affect on the youth culture of today. Maybe the influx of the alternate and the hybridity in music is what we all felt half a decade ago–If it is though I am very disappointed. Music, bands and their lifestyles have changed so much that people will stop at nothing to make money.
I quite often wonder how the youth of today are supposed to respect people who sell out for a quick buck. These so-called ‘musicians’ are meant to be idols, people living the dream we all have. However all that can be seen are very sad products of capitalism. Even Iggy Pop couldn’t resist the fake plastic world of advertising. The once great Iggy Pop is now using his reckless reputation to sell Insurance! How can this be so, this man was pure rebellion and one stage. But the same can be said for many others. For example what do you think Sid Vicious would say if he could see Johnny Rotten selling country life butter?
Although it is a great shame for some of music’s legends to sell out, it is nothing in comparison to the pathetic excuse we have these days for musicians. They aren’t even talented enough to become sell outs, they generally start there! I say bring back to days of hard work. Dreaming of fame whilst staring at the bottom of an empty pint glass in your local pub that smells like stale beer, piss and fags! Bring back that feeling of elation when you manage to make a profit on a gig. Don’t sell yourself for some loose change and Tesco.com discount vouchers. Bring back real talent that seriously blows your mind and if this can’t be done, leave alternative music alone- It’s NOT for sale.
